The same milk can behave differently at two pour heights.
When the spout is higher, the stream enters the cup with more downward momentum. Milk mixes with the coffee, which helps create an even base colour. If you stay high for the entire pour, the white foam can remain below the surface and no clear design appears.
When the spout is close, the stream enters more gently. The lighter microfoam can spread across the top, creating visible white contrast. Getting close does not compensate for badly textured milk, but it lets usable microfoam appear where you can shape it.
Swirl the pitcher. The milk should look glossy and integrated rather than dry, bubbly or separated. If it is not, fix the steaming stage first with the milk-steaming guide.
Start with a steady stream above the surface so the milk mixes into the coffee. Do not try to draw the pattern immediately.
Tilt the cup toward the pitcher and bring the spout close to the surface. If you wait until the cup is almost full, there may not be enough room for the white shape to expand.
Hold the close position long enough for white microfoam to spread. A sudden rush can wash out the shape; a flow that is too weak may not move enough foam into the pattern.
Once the white shape has formed, raise the pitcher slightly and move the stream through it. This narrows the stream and pulls the shape into a heart.

Move the spout closer and make the change earlier. You may still be pouring at mixing height when you expect the drawing phase to begin.
You may be lifting the pitcher too soon, pouring too forcefully, or continuing to mix after the pattern starts. Hold the close position briefly before the cut-through.
The close position is working, but flow and placement need practice. Keep the cup tilted, aim consistently, and make one simple heart before adding side-to-side movement.
Recheck the milk. Large bubbles, dry foam or separated liquid cannot create a clean surface pattern simply by changing height. Practise aeration and rotation before repeating the pour.
