Espresso Puck Screen Guide: Size, Headspace & Cleaning

An espresso puck screen sits on top of the tamped coffee. Before adding one below your machine's shower screen, check three things: its diameter, the space above your coffee and the extra cleaning step. If your machine does not prescribe a screen, it is an optional accessory rather than a necessary upgrade.

Barista Swag sells the screen discussed here. This guide uses documented specifications and brewing guidance, not a controlled extraction test or a promise of better flavour.

What does a puck screen do?

A removable screen creates a barrier between the grounds and the brew head. MHW-3BOMBER designs its screen to spread incoming water and reduce grounds contacting the shower screen. That is a description of its intended job, not proof that every shot will extract more evenly.

Do not buy one simply to make the used coffee puck look tidier. Barista Hustle's experiments on spent pucks found that visible holes and wetness were not reliable indicators of bad tamping or distribution. A neater puck alone does not establish better espresso.

The current MHW-3BOMBER model: diameter is not thickness

The MHW-3BOMBER Espresso Puck Screen listed by Barista Swag is 58.5 mm in diameter. Its product page describes a 0.8 mm-thick, double-layer, 304 stainless-steel screen.

  • 58.5 mm is the width: it determines whether the screen fits inside your basket.
  • 0.8 mm is the thickness: it occupies space above the tamped coffee.

MHW-3BOMBER also makes other sizes and constructions. Do not transfer a different version's specifications or accessories to this listing. Check the selected product before ordering, particularly if a search result shows a different thickness.

Check basket fit and headspace separately

Start with the basket actually installed, including any aftermarket replacement. A machine or portafilter described as “58 mm” does not by itself confirm clearance for a 58.5 mm screen. Check the basket's specification and the screen's fit at the height where it will rest on your usual dose, not only at the basket rim. It should lie flat without being forced against the walls.

Headspace is the gap above the prepared coffee. Adding a screen uses some of that room. Barista Hustle explains why clearance below the shower screen matters and why a wetter puck can simply reflect more space above the grounds. Do not increase your dose merely to obtain a dry puck.

There is no single gram reduction that follows from a screen's thickness: your basket, coffee and recipe matter. Follow the machine and basket instructions, and never force the portafilter to lock around an overcrowded basket. If the screen leaves insufficient clearance, stop and resolve the fit rather than compressing the stack harder.

Also inspect the brew head. MHW-3BOMBER's product guidance recommends a hollow, centre-hole version for protruding group-head screws. Barista Swag's listing does not identify a centre-hole option. Confirm the exact version and screw clearance instead of assuming compatibility from the machine brand alone.

Where it goes in your brewing routine

  1. Prepare the coffee first. Use your established dose, distribution and tamping routine. The screen is added afterward; it does not replace those steps. See our WDT, distributor and tamper guide if those roles are unclear.
  2. Lay the screen flat on the tamped puck. For this MHW double-layer design, the manufacturer's diagram specifies the fine-perforated side facing down toward the coffee. Follow the supplied instructions if your screen is a different construction.
  3. Confirm clearance and brew. Start from a recipe that fits safely. Record dose, beverage weight, shot time and taste rather than changing several settings at once.
  4. Remove it safely. Follow your machine's pressure-release procedure before removing the portafilter. The screen may be hot; let it cool sufficiently to handle, recover it before discarding the grounds and clean it for the next use.

Cleaning: follow the exact screen's instructions

The current stainless-screen listing specifies rinsing and wiping. Remove coffee residue after use and let the screen dry before storage. For deeper cleaning, use only a method approved for this exact screen. Do not assume a dishwasher program, detergent concentration or soaking instructions for another model apply.

A puck screen is another item to maintain, not a replacement for your machine's cleaning schedule. Keep caring for the shower screen, basket and brew group as the machine manufacturer directs.

When can you skip the purchase?

If your current routine produces espresso you enjoy and cleaning is manageable, an additional screen may offer little practical value. If fit is uncertain or you dislike retrieving and washing another part, keep the simpler routine. Where a screen is a prescribed component of the machine's brewing system, however, follow that machine's manual rather than treating it as optional.

If you try one, compare several shots and assess taste, repeatability and cleanup separately. Keep it because it helps your routine, not because a cleaner-looking puck promises a better extraction. For sizing help, send us your basket brand and exact model.
