Steaming milk for latte art is less about making lots of foam and more about creating smooth, glossy microfoam. The process is simple: introduce a small amount of air at the beginning, then use a stable whirlpool to integrate it evenly into the milk.

For latte art, aim for milk that looks smooth and paint-like, with no large bubbles or separated layer of dry foam. Good texture comes from controlled air, steady circulation, the right milk volume, and stopping before the milk overheats.

What You Need

A reliable steam wand, cold milk, and a pitcher sized for the amount you are steaming are the essentials. The pitcher does not replace technique, but the right size and shape make controlled rotation easier to repeat.

How to Steam Milk for Latte Art

1. Start with cold milk and the right volume

Cold milk gives you more time to control aeration. Fill the pitcher only to its practical working range: too little milk can make rotation weak, while too much can crowd the vortex and risk overflow.

2. Position the steam wand slightly off-centre

Place the steam-wand tip just below the surface and slightly to one side, rather than directly in the middle. The goal is to create a circular movement around the pitcher.

3. Add air early and briefly

4. Build a stable vortex

6. Swirl before pouring

Give the pitcher a gentle swirl to keep the texture integrated. Tapping can remove a few surface bubbles, but it cannot repair poorly steamed milk.
